Volvo Champion Club - Good sailing for all the family
News from 2 handed boat classes
Enterprise David Hodgson / E18266
With the season already in full swing, I can provide you with a little bit of news on the Enterprise front.
Good news: my boat is finally back from a prolonged holiday in the middle of Dartmoor in Devon where I had taken it to be painted. It took a little longer than planned because the weather turned nasty a few hours after the last coat of varnish (do you remember when it snowed a few weeks ago?) so the varnish went all funny and had to be removed and re-applied. But she’s now gleaming and ready to go!
More good news: the Bird family with a tiny bit of assistance from Sue Whitehill and myself swept the board in the 6-hour race, being not only first on handicap but first over the line competing with Lasers, and an RS200 which should both be quicker over the water. That red boat goes like the clappers! The Birds are now a two-Enterprise family having purchased David Morland’s old boat which they are doing up ready to get on the water in a few weeks’ time.
Piers Shallow has had varnish trouble similar to mine but hopes to have dealt with that soon, so hopefully we’ll see a few Enterprises on the water before long. I also met a couple of people rigging up their blue sails the other day. Hopefully we’ll get the fleet onto the results lists sooner rather than later. It’s been a quiet Spring for us so far (perhaps that’s just lulling those Solos, Lasers and RSs into a false sense of security before the Blue-sailed plague overwhelms them ...)
Racing isn’t everything, so if you feel hesitant about entering a race, just pop down to the Club at the weekend. Saturday mornings are best (although the Oppies are out in numbers) but usually if you ask the race officer nicely he or she will allow you to sail during a race – provided you keep clear of the racing.
I’d be delighted to meet you, so please introduce yourself if you see me. I normally sail from the jetty nearest the road entrance and my boat is white, wooden decks, number 18266. It would be great to meet you,
GP14 Colin Scott
An entry of 13 contested the GP14 Open meeting on Sunday 30 March. Competition was fierce!
Tony Canning helmed, with David Saunders crewing, in David's latest equipped boat — thanks to Tony supplying and fitting parts to their unsinkable yellow Mark 2 boat.
Another contender looking for a result Paul Reeves and his various crew namely Lynn Lewis being the expert on the spinnaker.
Barry Bennett in his new boat also felt a bookies favourite.
Also competing was Charlie Foreman with a rebuilt transom Canning/Wells design modification after the back of the boat fell off in the 2007 GP14 Open.
Light, shifting winds and sunshine throughout the day contrasted with the strong winds and the rain of the previous day, which may have discouraged some contestants.
Mark Wolf (British Transport SC) and James Ward (PSC) were the early leaders in the first race but Charlie Foreman employing some local knowledge, moved up the fleet and stole 2nd within 30 meters of the finish line.
Charlie Foreman led from the start in the second race and maintained that position to the finish followed by Mark Wolf in his boat named ‘Keep Smiling’ and James Ward just behind.
For the final race, James Ward took an early lead and after a challenge from Charlie Foreman held on to win. Mark Wolf lost out in a port/starboard incident with Paul Reeves who had to bear away to avoid a collision which resulted in Mark Wolf doing turns on the first beat and, despite moving strongly through the fleet, was unable to challenge the leaders.
Mark Wolf and Charlie Foreman therefore both had 1st and 2nd places, but Charlie, for PSC, took the honours with a better discard.
Thanks go to the race officer Andrew Boyce and his team.
It’s great to see more GP14s out on the lake and would be very useful to have the GP14 owners contact email addresses for future events.
Graduate: 2008 Open Meeting David Mitchell
A mixture of home and visitor boats contested for the Graduate Open Meeting at Papercourt Sailing Club on 30 March 2008 which counts towards the Southern Quintet trophy.
The lake was shared with the GP14 open meeting. Of the Graduates competing, three were utilising the new sail plan with the remainder using the conventional mainsail, providing an interesting comparison.
The weather for the day was light breezes and sunny skies. Dave and Sandra Wilson proved the effectiveness of the new sails and scored three victories, but they did not have it all their own way with strong competition from Amer Sarssam and Sylvia Hayden, Fraser and Russell Hayden, and Clive Jackson and Richard Culwick.
After three races, Dave and Sandra came out on top with Amer and Sylvia in second place while the Hayden’s beat Clive Jackson on a tie breaker. The verdict on the new sail plan was positive with the three new plan boats taking top places after handicap in the final race. Everybody is looking forward to the next round of the Quintet at Emberton Park on Sunday 20 April.
GRADUATE OPEN 2008: RESULTS

Well, I think I can safely say that the 200 circuit is definitely in full swing now, just in time for the sun to come out!
There have been many Papercourt successes in the last few weeks worth mentioning ... but as I’m in the middle of revision for up-coming A-levels, please check the write ups on the RS website!
Since our last issue, we have had the Datchet Open which was a bit on the extreme side to say the least. Gales that took out the entire fleet came past with freak hail storms and rain, as well as snow overnight just stopping in time for us to sail on the Sunday morning. There was a good turnout with Andrew Boyce and Clare Michelmore (34), James Boyce and Sarah Hornby (18), Sam Tozer and Katy Nichols (30) and Jon Paton and me (36).
Next up was the Draycote Open which was attended by James Boyce and Sarah Hornby (16) and Rob Hardwick and me (37). This event had a decent amount of breeze but not as many competitors, which is a shame because it was a good event!
The next weekend brought two events on the SEAS circuit. Bough Beech on the Saturday was attended by James Boyce and Will Rogers and Rob Hardwick and me. This was a beautiful day with medium winds and a home win for James and Will with a 1st,1st, 2nd, 5th, and an 11th for Rob and I.
The Sunday had a much smaller event at Island Barn, with only six boats and Sam Tozer and me, being the only visitors! Not to worry ... After light winds with some scattered rain and wind, we won with a 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, narrowly beating Dicken Maclean and Nicola Groves who had won the Glyn Charles Pursuit the preceding day.
Then we had the HISC RS Anniversary Regatta, which took place in glorious sunshine (I have the tan lines to prove it!) and with variable wind, getting lighter throughout the weekend. There was a good turnout from Papercourt with James Boyce and Sarah Hornby, Sam Tozer and Katy Nichols, Aaron Smith and Jeremy Williamson and Colin Smith and me.
The racing was not a series throughout so I am not going to go through all the results, except perhaps to congratulate Aaron Smith and Jeremy Williamson, who came 5th out of about 120 boats on the water at the RS Pursuit Race on the Monday beating everyone bar four 200s who took the podium positions.
So all that’s left for me to say is Happy Sailing!

There is not much to report in this issue of the PSC newsletter.
The Nationals are next Bank Holiday weekend. I am aware of two Papercourt entries so far. It will be a great event for all abilities so I encourage others to attend.
There will be pre-nationals coaching sessions on the intervening Saturday afternoons.
There are no further local Feva events until after the summer break when there are Open Meetings at Stokes Bay and Hillhead, both of which are close to Fareham.
I look forward to seeing you all on the water.
